Happy and healthy skin in the spring by Re:lax London

As the seasons change and the sun begins to peek through the clouds, your skin’s needs change too. Katie White, master facialist and founder of the award-winning re:lax skin studio in Hackney, shares her top tips for happy and healthy skin in the spring.

Cleanse

Whatever the season, cleansing should always be the first step in your daily skincare routine. It helps to remove dirt, oil, and makeup that has accumulated on your skin throughout the day, which can clog pores and cause breakouts. Cleansing is especially important in spring. As the weather warms, we start to spend more time outside, exposing your skin to more pollutants. Choose a gentle cleanser that hydrates and rejuvenates, while maintaining your skin’s natural balance and apply a protecting SPF to your skin everyday before your make up, such as the Everyday Humans Resting Beach Face SPF 30.

Exfoliate

Have you found that the winter months tend to dry your skin out? This is because the cold, dry air quite literally sucks the moisture from your skin and strips it of its protective layer. Spring air can still be dry and cold, especially in the mornings, but there can also be warmer periods. This can play havoc with our skin, causing irritations and inflammation, such as rosacea and eczema, that are often exacerbated by the increased pollen count, making skin appear dull and flaky. Exfoliating is a must during the changing on the seasons, as it helps to remove dead skin cells and promote skin cell renewal, revealing smoother, brighter and healthy skin. Exfoliate no more than once or twice a week, as over-exfoliating can be damaging to the skin.

Apply a serum

Apply a lightweight, hydrating serum after you’ve exfoliated. Serums contain high concentrations of active ingredients, such as hyaluronic acid, which help to nourish the skin, restore its natural balance, and provide ongoing protection. Choose a serum that contains plenty of vitamins and antioxidants, such as Mad Hippie Vitamin C.

Moisturise

Moisturising helps to lock in hydration and protect the skin from dryness and environmental stressors. A light, non-greasy moisturiser can help to hydrate the skin without feeling heavy or greasy, especially in the warmer months. Look for a moisturiser that contains ingredients Such as glycerin - which helps to lock in hydration - and aloe vera, which can soothe and calm irritated skin. We love the Haeckels Eco Marine Cream, which contains seaweed harvested from the shores of Margate. It’s nourishing but ultra-light weight and the packaging is fully compostable at home.

Apply an SPF

Finally, after a long winter the days are getting longer and warmer, but this also means the sun is more powerful, exposing your skin to UV rays. Wearing a broad-spectrum SPF everyday is important to help protect your skin from sunburn, premature ageing, and skin damage. Look for a sunscreen that has an SPF of 30 or higher, which is appropriate for your skin type.

Everyday Humans Resting Beach Face SPF 30 is light, hydrating, and leaves no white cast.
